November 21, 2009

I've got a busy morning ahead, but my afternoon should be more or less free. As soon as I finish posting this update I'm going to go with Lisa to the grocery store to help out. It's going to be a big shopping day because I'm making Thanksgiving dinner for everyone this Thursday. Also this morning I've got my usual weekly meeting with the lead developer of JSF BodyShop™. I can't wait to see what's been accomplished this week!

As expected, yesterday my new GoPro HD Helmet HERO camcorder arrived. As soon as I finished up at work I got everything set up and took a short test ride. Today I've got some pictures, a video and some initial impressions about the camera. Lisa and I are going to be hitting the trails this weekend, so early next week I'll probably expand on what I write today.

Here's the unopened retail box.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

The GoPro HD camera sitting next to its waterproof polycarbonate and stainless steel housing. The combined weight of the camera, the 1100 mAh lithium-ion battery and the housing is 5.9oz.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

Here's everything that comes in the box. It comes with a lot of mounting attachments and accessories, but there are no instructions on how to use any of them. Granted most are self-explainatory, but for someone new to these kinds of cameras (like me) a little booklet with explanations of the various mounting options would have been very nice.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

My first choice was to mount the GoPro to the side of my helmet. I was able to accomplish this by using one of the curved surface adhesive mounts and the included side mount pivot arm. The adhesive is VERY strong, so no worries there. Unfortunately this mounting option simply does not work: the camera is too heavy and too far away from the helmet, and so everything felt unbalanced, lopsided and just plain uncomfortable.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

Next I used the included vented helmet strap mount to put the camera right on top of the helmet. This mount is very secure, and the camera felt much better here than off to the side. Still, I definitely noticed the weight. Also, it looks pretty big and ungainly sitting up there--certainly not very aerodynamic.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

I won't rehash all the specs here, as they are well documented on GoPro's web site.

The GoPro HD Helmet HERO has a lot of options, all of which can be set using the LCD screen and the two buttons on the camera. The options can be changed with the waterproof housing on, which is very nice. The instructions are very clear, and I had no problem changing the settings to my liking. The menus are limited to a very small display area, so they can be a bit cryptic if you don't have the instructions handy. That said, the main settings I'd be interested in changing in the field (video mode, resolution) are easy to get to and change without the instructions.

One thing that I find absolutely inexcusable is the camera has no NVRAM to maintain your settings and the time and date. Need to swap the battery out while you're in the field? You'll have to navigate the maze of menus and re-enter all your settings. Very poor design choice.

I read on another site that the camera could take pictures at pre-set intervals while shooting video. This is simply not the case; it's one mode or the other. That's too bad, and I probably won't use the photo mode much at all since I'll almost always be filming.

The video quality and the audio quality is quite good. I have a test video below, but it's been compressed by YouTube and not as high quality as the raw footage. The lack of wind noise is pretty amazing, and with the included non-waterproof skeleton back housing door (which is what I used for the video) really lets the camera capture everything but the wind. Great work there.

One thing that I found highly annoying is the clicking sounds whenever I went over a bump. You'll definitely notice them as you watch my video. I checked the mounting rig, and I know it's not the camera in the housing causing it (the camera is very tightly encased and simply does not move around). I'm pretty sure the clicking is coming from the plastic quick-release that is used to attach the camera assembly to the strap mount. There is a small amount of play where the two plastic parts meet, and the mic is probably picking that movement up. I'm not real happy about that, as a lot of my riding will be off-road in bumpy conditions. I am going to email GoPro and see what they have to say about the issue.

Here is the test footage that I shot at three of the five available resolutions....

Overall I like this camera. I am not very happy about the clicking noises and the ugly and fairly heavy box mounted on my head. You know, I've got the Contour HD 1080p sitting right next to me. I may just have to give that one a whirl this afternoon. Stay tuned...

November 20, 2009

I had an exceptionally good workout (back and biceps) yesterday morning. That was the first time I've lifted in the morning in a long, long time. I still think I prefer lifting in the afternoon, but it was nice for a bit of change.

The reason I lifted early yesterday was so I could go on a bike ride after work and check out my new wearable HD camcorder. The package arrived on schedule, but someone in the warehouse accidentally pulled the wrong camera! When I opened the box I was disappointed to find the Contour 1080p and not the GoPro HD Helmet HERO. Like I said on Facebook yesterday, I was briefly tempted to keep the Contour. The Contour is an exceptionally good looking piece of equipment--far sexier than the boxy GoPro HD:

Contour HD 1080p

I stopped drooling long enough to reminded myself that this is a marriage and not a one night stand; personality trumps appearance. I did a lot of research on these cameras, and I know the GoPro HD Helmet HERO is the right choice for me. So I called RPM and they took care of things with no hassle at all. They overnighted me the GoPro camera, and it will be here today.

So I'm going to lift early again today. I want to get the camera out on the road this afternoon after work so I can test it out and get familiar with it before hitting the trails this weekend. I'll probably post some photos of the unboxing, some test footage and my initial impressions in tomorrow morning's update.

November 19, 2009

A few minutes ago Lisa called me from the cruise ship, which has just returned to port. They should start disembarking within the hour, so she should be home by noon. Loki and I sure missed her; things are just not the same around here when she's gone!

So after quite a bit of research, yesterday I finally pulled the trigger on the GoPro HD Helmet HERO. The choice I had to make was between the GoPro HD Helmet HERO and the VholdR Contour 1080p camera. I detailed some of my thoughts on both of these cameras (based on my research) a couple days ago in this update. By the way, something I didn't mention in that comparison is that the GoPro allows the user to configure the camera in the field, while the Contour requires a computer with their special software to change video modes, adjust the exposure, etc. That's a pretty big deal to me.

The official release of the GoPro HD Helmet HERO is not until next week, but select authorized GoPro retailers have been getting them in. Of course the cameras are snatched up very quickly (this is a high demand item), so finding one right now is not exactly easy. Well, yesterday I found an authorized GoPro retailer that actually has them in stock. Not only did this company have the cameras in stock, orders placed by 11:00 AM (PST) ship the same day with free USPS Priority shipping (and next-day Express Mail shipping is available at a very reasonable cost). They even toss in an 8GB high speed (Class 6) SDHC card for free! It all sounded to good to be true, but sure enough my order shipped yesterday via Express Mail and should be here in a few hours. I was pleasantly surprised when I actually found a company that has these cameras in stock, but I was so impressed with their awesome service, fast shipping and free extras that I just have to give these guys a free plug: The company is RPM GEAR.COM, and they really do have the GoPro HD cameras in stock (but you better be fast - I have a feeling they are going to go quickly).

So with Lisa coming home and the new camera arriving later today, I think a ride this afternoon is inevitable. I am going to go do my back and biceps workout right after I finish typing this update so I can do some riding after work.

November 18, 2009

As most of you know, for the past few months my diet and training have changed quite a lot compared to how I've done things in years past...

DIET: I no longer eat every 3 hours (I simply eat when I'm hungry), I don't count calories anymore and I've added much more variety to my diet. I've successfully maintained my body fat percentage while doing this, and I no longer feel like I'm a slave to food.

WEIGHT TRAINING: I still love training with weights, and I still train hard, but I'm not locked into any particular style of training or routine. I get in the gym and have fun. Sometimes I do the same weight training routine for a few weeks, and other times I'll simply get in there and wing it.

CARDIO: I no longer do any formal cardio on the recumbent bike, and I've been spending lots of time outside on a real bike. I am falling in love with outdoor biking, and I expect that once I start riding off-road I'm really going to get in deep.

All these changes I've made have come at a "price": I've lost a decent amount of muscle, especially over the past month as I've been riding more frequently and for longer distances (often without breaks for food). I'm still pretty muscular, but I'm nowhere near as big as I was at the end of my 2008 bulk. The reason I put "price" in quotes is because I really don't care about the muscle loss. What I do care about is being healthy, in good shape and happy. I am all of those things, and I truly feel like I've finally found the balance I've been searching for all these years.

I am still going to run a cutting cycle starting in January. Right now my body fat percentage is perfectly healthy at around 12.5%, but it's a little high for my liking. I want to cut down to sub-10% and then maintain.

November 17, 2009

My camcorder rig was sold yesterday, so I'll be using those funds to finance a high-definition helmet camera! There are really only two choices here: VholdR's ContourHD 1080p or GoPro's HD Helmet HERO.

Right now I've pretty much decided on the HD Helmet HERO. I've watched quite a bit of footage from both of these cameras, and I definitely prefer the video I've seen from the HERO. The HERO also seems to do a much better job of cutting out wind noise compared to the ContourHD, which is very important to me. Check out some of the video on their web sites and judge for yourself.

The HERO can handle up to 32GB SDHC cards--twice as large as the ContourHD's maximum of 16GB. I also like that the HERO will make available so-called "Backpacs" that will expand the functionality of the camera (for example, one Backpac doubles the battery life to around 5 hours and other adds an LCD screen for preview and playback).

The ContourHD is very sleek and good looking compared to the HERO, which is just plain ugly. Still, I like that the HERO has a very tough, waterproof (to 180 feet) polycarbonate and steel housing. I would be worried about breaking the ContourHD in a wipe out.

Another huge win over the ContourHD is the HERO can take continuous 5MP photographs at preset intervals from 2-60 seconds. I think that's a great feature, and one that I'll definitely use a lot.

Finally, the HERO offers a much wider variety of mounting options right out of the box compared to the ContourHD.

Oh, and the HERO is $30.00 less than the ContourHD. I think I'm going to place my pre-order for the HERO today (the official launch date is November 25th).

You can expect a lot more video from me very soon! :)

November 16, 2009

I hope everyone had a very good weekend! Lisa left for her cruise yesterday morning, and I didn't really have any specific plans for the day. I didn't feel like sitting around the house alone, so I decided to load up my bike and head over to the Seminole-Wekiva trail for a solo run. I wound up doing 29 miles, and I pushed the pace pretty good. My average speed to the halfway point was 15 MPH, and average for the entire 29 mile trip was 13.7 MPH (which included a couple miles of off-road trails). Unfortunately there are a few stops where the trail crosses busy intersections, so my average speed was negatively impacted by those stops.

Once I got to the Markham Trailhead (about 14 miles into the ride), I started thinking about that darn river again (you may recall that on November 7th Lisa and I got lost trying to find it). I met a couple of nice women at the trailhead, and I asked them if they knew where the trail was that ran down to the Wekiva river. They told me about a hidden dirt trail that runs behind some trees along the north side of Markham road. This trail, they told me, would eventually intersect with another trail that would take me straight down to the river!

Lisa was nervous about me riding solo (which I think is silly), and before she left she made me promise that I would not go into the forest trying to find the river. Good thing I had my fingers crossed. Seriously, I just had to go. I had the directional information I needed from the two women I met, so the way I look at it I wasn't trying to find the river anymore, I was merely going to it. Is that too much of a stretch? :)

For the rest of the story and a few pictures checkout yesterday's entry to my photo journal. Unfortunately Lisa took the better of our two cameras with her on the cruise, so I have no video this time. I'm still trying to justify purchasing an HD helmet camera, which is why I'm trying to sell my camcorder rig. I've reduced the asking price to $200.00, plus I'll throw in a free 1-year Platinum Membership to the JSF Forums and BodyShop™. As an added bonus, I'll probably have brilliant High-Definition footage of me wrecking horribly at Santos.

I've opened the December 2009 "100 Challenge" for entry. Details are immediately below this update.

Lisa is setting sail for the Bahamas today. Man, I really wish I could go. I have very fond memories of the 2008 JSF Cruise to the Bahamas. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do today. I thought about driving out to the Santos trails (mentioned in yesterday's update), but I think that will be a lot more fun with Lisa. I showed her some of the pictures and videos on the Santos information web site, and she's really excited about going. There are campgrounds with electric and water hookups, and I joked to Lisa that this July when the lease is up on my current vehicle I might buy an RV and spend entire weekends up there. Actually, knowing me, that might not be a joke.

One last thing about Santos. If you have Google Earth, the entire trail system is mapped out along with pictures and videos. It's really cool. Here's the Google Earth KMZ file.

Yesterday I had my usual weekly meeting with the developer of the JSF BodyShop™ software and web site. We had a lot of ground to cover, and the meeting ran just over 2 hours. An amazing amount of progress has been made over the past week! We are getting very close to the closed beta phase. I'm excited beyond words about this project. I know this software is going to make a very real difference in people's lives.

Speaking of BodyShop™, we'd like to know what sorts of simple fitness calculators you'd like to see on the site. Please give us your thoughts here.

November 14, 2009

It looks like it's going to be a pretty nice day outside, so when Lisa gets off work I think we're going to hop on the bikes and get at least 15 miles in. I don't think we'll have time to hit the trails before it gets dark, so we'll probably need to stay close to home.

I've been doing some research on the off-road trails around here, and from what I can tell Santos is pretty much unanimously regarded as the best MTB trail system in the area, if not the entire state. It's a bit of a drive for me, but it sounds well worth it. Apparently there are over 60 miles of Yellow (Beginner), Blue (Intermediate) and Red (Advanced) singletrack trails sprawled across 80,000 acres! It sounds like I should be able to find a couple trails to get my off-road feet dirty without killing myself. Check this out:

The above image just shows part of the trail system! Check out the interactive Google Map for a better look.

November 13, 2009

I had a really good back and biceps workout yesterday, and I changed things up a bit for this week. My leg workout on Monday was a heavy, low volume workout, so yesterday I decided to use more moderate weights and higher volume. I did 4 sets of 12 deadlifts, 3 sets 10 T-Bar rows, 3 sets of burnout wide-grip bodyweight pullups, 3 sets of 10-12 barbell curls, 2 sets of "down the rack" hammer curls (to failure) and 2 sets of burnout bodyweight chin-ups. I had lots of energy, and felt focused and intense. By the way, the headache I mentioned in yesterday's update never returned.

So this weekend Lisa is going on yet another "business" cruise to the Bahamas. I put the word "business" in quotes for a reason: even though she and her co-workers have to attend some meetings, they spend most of their time partying. Anyway, yesterday I mentioned to Lisa that I wanted to take another stab at finding the Wekiva river at the end of the Seminole-Wekiva trail, but Lisa made me promise that I wouldn't. At first I thought she was worried about me getting lost or hurt, but she clarified things when she said, "What if you wound up in the hospital? Who would feed Loki?" Apparently Loki missing a meal is far more dire than me sustaining injury serious enough to require hospitalization. lol So I promised I wouldn't go off into the Wekiva National Forest by myself, but I may go check out my first dirt trail. I need to find a baby trail that won't kill a total off-road n00b like me.

My camcorder is still for sale. Make an offer.

I developed a killer sinus headache yesterday afternoon, which is a very rare thing for me. I decided to skip my planned bike ride and took the day off from exercise. This morning when I first woke up my head was still killing me, but now the headache is almost completely gone. I can still feel some pressure, so hopefully it won't come back. Even if the headache returns I'm going to do my back/biceps workout this afternoon. Very often the act of lifting + the endorphin rush helps alleviate a headache.

Hey, anyone want to buy my camcorder with some extra accessories? It's the Canon Optura 30 Digital MiniDV camcorder. I've only used it like 3 or 4 times and it's in 100% perfect, brand new condition. Included is the camcorder, shoulder strap, AC power adapter, wireless remote, 720mAH battery, a spare extended run 1450mAH battery, external battery charger, MiniDV 60/90 digital video cassette and all instruction manuals. Asking $300 + $20 for ground shipping to anywhere in the lower 48 states. I'll also throw in a 1 year Platinum membership on the JSF Forums and JSF BodyShop ($100 value). Hit me up by email or PM on the forums if you are interested. PayPal or check is fine.

November 11, 2009

Someone wrote to me and asked if all the bike riding I've been doing lately has resulted in any muscle soreness. The answer is no, I've not experienced even the slightest amount of soreness or any other significant pain. Lisa was a little sore after our 35-mile ride this past Saturday, but she doesn't train with weights. About the only pain I've experienced was a sore butt towards the end of my longer rides. I upgraded the stock saddle and purchased some bike shorts (which have padding in them), but at the end of my 35-mile ride I was still a little uncomfortable. I'll probably go down to the bike shop this weekend and talk to the experts there about my options.

There are a few other pieces of biking equipment that I want to purchase...

Probably first on the list are clipless pedals and shoes. A clipless pedal rig will allow me to generate more power, but--more importantly--clipless pedals will get my hamstrings into the action. Right now my quads are doing the bulk of the work, so balancing that out with some power from my hamstrings is very attractive to me.

Something else that is near the top of my want list is an HD helmet camera! Fishing my bulky camera out of my pocket is distracting, and filming while steering with one hand is not very safe. I've been looking at a lot of different helmet cameras, and there are some amazing products out there right now. Most of the camera demo footage I've seen is very impressive. These cameras do an incredibly good job of removing all most all of the wind noise and stabilizing the image, and the video quality is outstanding. Check out some of this sick mountain bike test footage from the GoPro HD Helmet HERO camera (records on an SD card up to 1080p @ 30 FPS):

It's hard to believe the camera is only $299. It will be available on November 25th. I'm also looking at other cameras, but this one seems to have the best wind noise reduction and image of the ones I've seen so far. More footage and details are available on the GoPro website.

No weight training today, and the forecast looks good. I think Lisa and I will do a 15 or 20 mile ride when we get off work.

Thanks for stopping by - have a great day!

November 10, 2009

As expected after returning from a week off, yesterday was a very busy day. Not a bad day, or even a particularly stressful day, just a hectic one. By the way, if you missed yesterday's update, it's a fairly detailed account of my vacation biking adventures (and mis-adventures), complete with links to plenty of additional photos and videos. You can check it out here.

I had a great leg workout yesterday afternoon. I've been doing a lot of high volume squats lately (3 sets of 20 after pre-exhausting), so this week I decided to switch things around a bit and did 3 sets of 6 using very heavy weight. I also did some heavy stiff-leg deadlifts. I was going to do Bulgarian split squats, but it was a fairly cool and breezy afternoon, so I took the barbell out back and did backyard lunges. Low volume workout, but heavy and satisfying.

In addition to our normal daily correspondence, Matt Drouillard (the lead developer of the new JSF BodyShop™) and I are now holding regular "formal" meetings. Progress on the new site is proceeding at a fast pace, and we are still on track to launch the closed beta program very soon. If beta testing goes well we expect to publicly launch the site in January. We'll be releasing more details, screenshots and video in the weeks ahead.

I need to get to work. I'm still playing catch-up, and I hate feeling behind. Have a great day!

November 9, 2009

I'm back from my week-long vacation. Lisa and I packed so much into the past week that the vacation felt more like 2 weeks! I had to do some amount of work while I was off, but I knew about that going in. Thankfully there were no unplanned interruptions or network emergencies that required my presence.

This vacation was definitely a fitness-oriented vacation. I did my usual weight training, but the highlights of the vacation were the biking adventures! Over the past week Lisa and I rode nearly 100 miles on our bikes. Some of the riding was just around the neighborhood, but we documented three of the longer rides with photographs and pictures.

Last Sunday we decided to go on a long ride with the two-part goal of doing at least 20 miles and fully exploring all the roads with bike lanes near our subdivision. We wound up going 20.4 miles and really enjoyed the ride. Here's one photo from the trip. Many more photographs and a video of this ride can be found in this entry to my photo journal on the forums.

Bike lanes near our home

On Wednesday we decided to check out our very first first trail, the West Orange Trail. This wound up being a 28-mile trek, and we had an absolute blast! The trail winds through everything from rural countrysides to quaint towns. This is a photograph of me and Lisa right after we completed the 28 mile ride. I posted a bunch of other photographs, trail maps and a video of our West Orange Trail adventure in this entry to my photo journal on the forums.

Me and Lisa right after a 28 mile ride

Finally, in large part due to the beautiful weather, the trails were calling again this past Saturday morning. This time we decided to try the Seminole-Wekiva Trail. This turned out to be our longest adventure yet at 34.5 miles! The trail was absolutely stunning. We rode through just about every kind of setting you can imagine, from quiet pastures to busy freeways. At the 20-mile point we took our bikes off-road into the Wekiva National Forest on a ill-fated journey to find the Wekiva river. What we actually found was a swamp, bugs, ants, sugar sand (impossible to ride on) and overgrown trails with no signage. We got lost and had a little trouble finding our way back to the trailhead. Lisa was not a happy camper at this point in the journey. Thankfully once we got back on the paved trail the final 14 miles was a lot of fun!

Here's a video I put together, which includes footage of us lost in the forest and Lisa yelling at me (thanks for letting me include that footage, Lisa!)

Here's one of my favorite photographs from the Seminole-Wekiva Trail. I posted many more pictures and a couple of trail maps in this entry to my forum photo journal.

Lake on the Seminole-Wekiva Bike Trail

Obviously we're really enjoying the bikes, and we are absolutely hooked. I can't wait to get out and explore more trails, including some dirt trails. I'm very happy that I decided to go with a mountain bike. Mountain bikes are great on the paved trails, and it's really nice to be able to go off-road whenever I want.

Well, I'd better get to work. I've got a tremendous amount to catch up on, and a tough leg workout this afternoon. It's great to be back!
