Today is the final day of my 2006 SGX cutting cycle. This week I've been working on eating very clean, and staying away from salt and other foods that cause me to retain water. I've also doubled up on my cardio, and been doing lots of physical activities. Of course I'm taking in plenty of water; if anything I've increased my water consumption this week. This morning I'm down to a 2006 cutting low of 192.2 pounds. This past week I've probably lost about a pound or two of fat, and 4-5 pounds of water. I'll probably weigh about the same tomorrow morning, as I'm pretty dried out.
Tomorrow morning I'll be posting my final 2006 cutting
pictures, and will update the rest of the site to reflect my summer "maintenance" phase, which will focus on strength building in the gym and
having lots of fun outside the gym
. With the increased calories, the "relaxed" diet and a long 2-week
vacation in there, I expect that I'll put on a little muscle along with some fat. I'm going to be careful to not put on too much fat, as I
don't want to start my bulk this fall in need of a cut!
Have a great Friday--see you tomorrow!

I skipped my free meal last night; with just two days left in my 2006 cutting cycle, I don't want muddy the waters with post-cheat meal bloat. I'll probably have my free meal this Saturday night, and on Tuesday (July 4th) I'll most likely grill some burgers or steak and have a couple of beers.
I know I just took a vacation earlier this month, but you may recall I've got another vacation coming up in July. Gee, it really sucks having to take all this vacation time before August! If I don't use the vacation days, I lose 'em. Anyway, my final vacation for this summer is two weeks long. It starts on July 8th and continues through July 23rd. There will be no updates to the main site during that time, as I'll be way too busy sipping cocktails on the beach and eating out. I know I'll probably put on a couple pounds of fat over my vacation, but I will be working out almost every day and eating clean for the majority of my meals. Daily updates will resume on Monday, July 24th.
I'm off to do my cardio. See you tomorrow!

I got my wish yesterday and was able to take my lunch outside. I got all the yard work done (except the weeding--that's this weekend), and I got some sun. Actually it was very sunny out for a short time, but the humidity was so high it was like working in a sauna. Almost as soon as I finished, the storm clouds rolled in. Thanks to all the rain we get in Florida during the summer, our grass grows so quickly that it needs to be mowed every 4-5 days. When I was overweight I hated doing yard work, and would often neglect the yard (as evidenced by the "before" pictures we took just before we began last year's home renovation). Now that I'm in better shape I usually don't mind getting out in the yard and working.
Besides, mornings like this one make it all worth it. I was just out back relaxing with my coffee and the dogs. Now that all the flowers and Crepe Myrtles are in bloom, everything looks really colorful. During the day there are dozens of critters: lizards, birds, frogs, butterflies and dragonflies, just to name a few. I really love relaxing out there! I just took this picture a few minutes ago while I was outside with the dogs:
I'd better go get my cardio done. Today's going to be pretty busy and I want to start it off right!

We've had a lot of rain in Orlando the past few days, and it looks like it's going to continue all week. I was hoping to get some sun before I take my monthly pictures on Saturday, but it looks like that might not happen. Lisa is trying to talk me into using a sunless tanning product, but I'm not interested. I know sunless tanning products have come a long way, but for whatever reason I just can't bring myself to use one. I guess I'm still afraid it will look "fake".
With all the rain, the grass really needs a cut. Hopefully the sun will come out for a while this afternoon so I can take an hour off from work, peel off my shirt and kill two birds with one stone.
Time for my cardio. Have a great day!

Yesterday I hung out all day with my Father-in-law and, I must admit, diet-wise I enjoyed a "free day". Breakfast was fine, but then I missed my next meal. For lunch we had BBQ, french fries and garlic bread. I missed my next meal, and for dinner I had a Subway tuna sub and Doritos. My face looks a little puffy this morning, but that's about it. I don't eat like that very often, and it's a good thing that I don't or my health and body would rapidly diminish. I think a free day every once in a while does a lot a good from a mental standpoint, but I will never understand how I used to let myself eat that poorly on a daily basis. Usually the day after a cheat meal I'm craving healthy foods.
Don't forget: AtLarge Nutrition, has just launched their "Maximum Mass Stack" guide. I'm excited about my upcoming Summer Strength Building program, and the change in my food intake. I mentioned yesterday that I was going to increase my daily caloric intake slightly (maybe 300-500 calories per day), but I received some emails asking if I'd still be following the SGX or SUP2 dietary protocols during this time. SGX is for cutting, and SUP2 is for bulking; I'm not bulking or cutting this summer. Dietarily speaking I'm pretty much going to take in just enough calories to maintain my current weight (maybe slightly more), while my weight training program (MAX-OT) will be focused on strength gains and not hypertrophy. This fall (probably September or October) I'll be bulking with a focus on pure muscle size gains using Swolecat's tried-and-true SUP2 bulking program.
I've got to get going, today's going to be a busy (but very fun) day! Enjoy your Sunday and, as always, I'll see you tomorrow.

Yesterday was a pretty slow work day, and I really felt like hitting the weights so I did my arm workout mid-day instead of my usual
6:00 PM time. I took a few pictures of my post-workout guns
(I mean that literally, so don't click if they scare you). Lisa pretty much made fun of me all night, so feel free to pile on if you like.
I've had a few people ask me if I'm still doing supersets for my biceps and triceps, and the answer is "Yes!" I feel like bicep/tricep supersets have made a tremendous difference in my progress. Supersets are very demanding, but I enjoy the mental and physical challenge a great deal.
So, one week left to go on my 2006 cut. Next Saturday will mark the beginning of my summer "strength building" phase. This upcoming phase will be the first time I've ever lifted weights with the main focus on gaining strength and not size. I think further increasing my strength will assist with my hypertrophy progress when I bulk this Fall/Winter. For my strength building phase, I'll be increasing my calories slightly, and doing MAX-OT. Of course with the reduced reps and increased poundages, my biggest concern is injury--particularly my right shoulder. I've been very fortunate that my shoulder has held up for the past couple of years without any trouble, and I don't want that to change. I may break from the standard MAX-OT protocol a little bit and do an extra set of warmup reps for some exercises.
I'd better go get on the bike - lots to do today!

Loki was sick to his stomach last night (he's fine now) and had to go out in the middle of the night. I had trouble falling back asleep and wound up oversleeping almost a whole hour. I'm was feeling a little groggy when I woke up, but now that I've got some coffee in me I feel pretty normal.
Loki is such a good boy, even when he's sick he asks to be let outside. It was not always this way. When I first rescued Loki he was running wild on the streets, and was maybe 8 months old. The first year we had him he was a terror: he chewed everything, he would pee in the house, he dug under the fence when we let him outside for a minute or two, every time we opened the front door he'd try to escape and he clawed a hole in the wall every day while we were at work. That was about 10 years ago. After about a year of constant misbehavior, he suddenly stopped doing anything even remotely resembling his former self. For the last 9 years Loki has been the best behaved dog in the world. He literally does nothing wrong--EVER. 10 years ago I thought he was the devil, and now I can't imagine life without him around to brighten my day. I sure hate it when my dogs are feeling sick, and I'm glad he's feeling better this morning. Here is Loki (left) and Turtle, best friends.
When I wake up I rarely know what I'm going to talk about; I just sit down and start typing about whatever is on my mind. I guess this morning it was dogs, but now I need to get my butt on the bike--I'm running VERY late. Happy Friday!

I've decided that I'm going to move my "free/cheat meal" night from Friday to Wednesday, since that is when I've been taking it lately anyway. Wednesday is the one day of the work week that I do not have a weight training workout, so Lisa and I always go shooting on that night. Once we're done at the range, for some reason going out to eat always sounds really good. I've been enjoying my cheat meals a lot more since I started going out to eat instead of sitting around at home. I was getting sick of the same old pizza or BBQ routine anyway. My old cheat meal night (Friday) was actually kind of a pain because of my weight training schedule: I usually finish training around 6:30-6:40 PM, and my first PWO meal is always Nitrean and Dextrose. Then I'd have to wait until around 8:30 to eat again, and that's too late for Lisa. Once I'm done cutting, I'll probably allow myself two cheat meals per week: Wednesday night and then another one on Saturday or Sunday night.
Speaking of Nitrean and AtLarge Nutrition, they have just launched their "Maximum Mass Stack" guide. This morning my weight is down to a 2006 low--196.8 pounds. My muscle measurements are the same and I've not lost any strength, but I feel like I'm shrinking away. I evaluated myself in the mirror this morning, and most of my body looks like it's around 8% body fat, but then I get to that small area just below my belly button and I look like I'm at 12% body fat. It's very frustrating because I don't need to lose any more fat from any other part of my body, but my body will simply not let go of the fat in my trouble area no matter what I do (unless I'm willing to drop to around 5% body fat, which seems pointless for me).
So, I've been giving it some thought and I've decided that I'm going to keep cutting until the end of June, and then I'm going to stop. Starting in July I'm going to increase my calories a bit, and begin a weight training program designed primarily to increase strength (MAX-OT). I'll do this program for about three months, and will start my full-on hypertrophy bulking program (Swoled Up) in October. At least that's the current plan.
I mentioned my PDA in passing yesterday, but today I'd like to add it to my Favorite Things thread. I'd be lost without my PDA. It's an iPAQ model 4355. It has a thumb keyboard, wireless, Bluetooth and a large, bright screen. I keep all my contact information and appointments in it, and it's great just for surfing the web, sending emails or even administering servers (there is a pocket version of SSH). Before I owned a car with a built-in satellite navigation system, I used my iPAQ along with a small Bluetooth GPS receiver and a powered car mount. The system worked great! You may not need GPS on your handheld, but I'm mentioning it just to show how flexible and handy these little devices can be.

I forgot that I have to take my car into the shop this morning, so I have to start my cardio right now or I'm going to miss my appointment. I'm normally very good about putting appointments in my PDA, but this time I neglected to do so. Sorry for the short update!

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. I did, but it really flew by and now it's back to work. I can't really
complain, as I have yet another two week vacation coming up in July (July 8th through the 23rd).
I guess saving all those vacation days up all year long has its advantages. On August 5th my vacation days are reset, but
I'll probably wait for the Christmas holiday to take some more time off. I've been with my company for almost 7 years, so I've earned
a pretty nice vacation package.
Some of you have been wondering about the status of my Titan review, and why it's taking so long. Good question! The Titan review is coming, but we want to release it in conjunction with Fitcore's brand new web site, which is nearing completion. I've seen the new Fitcore site, and it's really something special. I know you are going to really like it! Needless to say, I still use my Titan every single workout, and love it more than ever. There are some other exciting new developments with Fitcore and the Titan, and we'll be talking about that stuff in the very near future, too. In the meantime, if you are interested in a Titan be sure to check out the Official Fitcore/Titan Information thread.

Yesterday we took Lisa's parents out to dinner for Father's day. Lisa's dad wanted Mexican food, so off we went. I love Mexican food, but it sure is salty--especially the chips and salsa. It's amazing how many chips one can eat without even realizing it (particularly when margaritas are involved--which, of course, means even more salt). I had fajitas, and they were excellent! As expected, this morning I'm bloated up like a big balloon.
I have to say, the past month or two I've pretty much been maintaining and not really doing a proper cut. I'm not adding fat, but I'm sure not losing any either. I guess once I hit 9% body fat I got a little complacent. Honestly, I'm totally happy with my present body fat levels, except for that damned "trouble spot" below my belly button. Even at 6-7% body fat that particular area never totally goes away, and as soon as I start eating a regular (non-cutting) diet it comes right back. Maybe that's why I'm subconsciously reluctant to be ultra-strict at this juncture--what's the point? It's one of those things that I go back and forth on constantly. This is something that I'll have to work out for myself, but I always try to be candid about my journey and talk openly about my triumphs, failures and decisions (or indecisions, as it were). I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm just rambling, as usual!
Cardio time, and tonight is biceps and triceps. I can't wait for tonight's workout, as my arms are in need of a good pummeling...

I'm so glad the weekend is here. The first week of work after a two-week vacation is always a killer (I already feel like I'm ready for another vacation!) It does feel good to be back to my regular schedule, and I feel like I've settled back into my normal groove. Despite a pretty hectic week at work, I didn't miss any workouts at all, and I'm proud of myself for that. It wasn't easy, and I had to fight the urge to skip once or twice.
Today I've got a lot of fun stuff planned, and one not-so-fun task: the garbage disposer died and I have to replace it. I just replaced the damn thing back in October 2004, but the one I bought was just a little 1/3 HP unit with a 1-year warranty (it was the same unit that lasted over 10 years, so I figured that was "good enough"). Anyway, this time I'm getting a better, more powerful disposer with a 4-year In Home part and labor warranty so I won't have to deal with this decidedly UN-FUN homeowner chore again: The Insinkerator PRO 333 3/4 HP continuous feed garbage disposer.
I'm off to do my cardio now. My arm workout will have to wait until tomorrow, as my biceps are still sore. I hope you have a great Saturday!

Tonight is normally my biceps/triceps workout, but my arms are still very sore from being indirectly worked earlier this week (triceps on chest night and biceps on back night). Normally they've recovered by Friday, but since I took last week off from weight training everything is extra sore this week. I never train a sore muscle, so I'm going to work my legs tonight and do my arm workout tomorrow or Sunday.
No cheat meal for me tonight: Lisa and I had our cheat meal on Wednesday night. I'm not sure why, but we were both craving restaurant food that night, so off we went. I always feel like eating healthy after my workouts, so eating chicken, rice and broccoli tonight is just fine with me.

I've added another Favorite Things "item" today: Magazine subscriptions. Did you know that Amazon offers great prices on all of your favorite magazines? I'm kind of a magazine junkie, and usually have 6-10 subscriptions to various magazines at any given time. Click on the above link if you want to browse the entire selection of available subscriptions (the categories are shown on the left, or just do a search if you know what you are looking for), or you can head directly to the Health & Fitness magazines.

A few months ago I had to shut down the JSF Amazon Mall due to a technical problem with the software. The developer was not able to find a solution, and the whole thing just sort of got placed on a shelf and forgotten about. Well, yesterday I decided to try installing the latest version of the software, and did some limited tests on it. It seems like the technical glitch that was creating problems on the server may have been resolved! I want to monitor it with a heavy load on it, so please browse around and make some of your regular Amazon purchases through the JSF Mall.

In honor of the JSF Amazon Mall reopening, I've decided to update my Favorite Things thread with a new item. I bought this item a few weeks ago after seeing a post on the forum about it. It's the Men's Bodygroom by Phillips/Norelco. This thing is great for shaving and trimming all areas (and I do mean ALL AREAS) below the neck. I've cut myself in some not-so-fun places using lesser products, but this one really delivers as advertised. The Bodygroom web site is hilarious, so be sure to check it out if you have not seen it.
Cardio time, and tonight is my delts workout--it should be a good one!

I had a work-related emergency this morning, but I was able to get everything fixed in time to do this update (and I'll still be able to get my cardio done). Talk about a stressful way to start the day--I think when I do my LISS cardio my heart rate will actually go down!
I had a pretty good back workout last night. I felt a little slow getting started, but once I hit my stride everything clicked into place. My lats and traps are already sore this morning, and I have a feeling that by tomorrow I'm going to be hurting pretty bad. Thankfully tonight I don't have a weight training workout and can rest up a bit.
Normally tomorrow night would be my leg workout; however, as I mentioned shortly before my vacation, I've moved back to a 5-day split. Why the change? I felt like my delts, biceps and triceps were not getting the attention, volume and intensity they deserved working them all on the same day. Tomorrow night I'll be working my delts, and leg day will be on Saturday or Sunday (whichever day works best for me, doesn't really matter). Friday night is still my bicep/tricep superset workout.
I hope you have a great day!

This morning my weight is 197 pounds--that's within two-tenths of a pound of my lowest cutting weight this year. My muscles measurements did not change over my vacation, and last night's chest workout was a slight improvement over last week's chest workout. As far as my body is concerned, it's almost as though the week of junk food never happened.
I think there are a few reasons why I didn't put on much fat over my vacation: I did cardio every single day, muscle burns a lot of calories and I have considerably more muscle mass now compared to any other time in my life and, finally, the old adage is true: "It's not how you eat some of the time, it's how you eat most of the time"; one week of junk food will not derail 3+ years of hard work.
Last night I was still holding a lot of water and was looking pretty bloated: my abs were blurred and my vascularity was diminished. When you get below 10% body fat, it's amazing how much a little water can alter your appearance. I've had a few requests for a post-vacation picture, so I took one last night and posted it in my photo journal. Here's the direct link. Personally I don't think it's a very good picture, but considering how I ate the last week of my vacation I guess it's better than what I expected.
Time for cardio, and tonight is back night. I missed last week's back workout, so I'm going to be very sore later this week!

After a relaxing two-week vacation from my usual life, today I return to my regular schedule. I feel like I've been away forever! My normal day-to-day life is so busy that each day of my vacation seemed twice as long. Thankfully Lisa and I were able to relax and enjoy our time together with very few interruptions from our work. I feel very rested and recharged this morning, and ready to get back to "normal".
I'm proud to report that I did not miss a single day of cardio! I did my normal cardio every single morning of my vacation. It was tempting to skip, but I knew I needed to get it done. I was only able to weight train once last week (Monday), so I'll just look at last week as my normally scheduled week off from weight training (I think I was overdue, anyway).
As for my diet, that was a mixed bag. The first week of my vacation I ate very well, and pretty much stayed on my normal dietary plan. The second week?
Eh, not so good.
I ate out a lot last week, and made no effort to choose healthy items: Hamburgers, french fries, country
fried steak, gravy, BBQ, baked beans, garlic bread, pizza, queso & tortilla chips, fajitas, ice cream, chips, butter popcorn, soda... I also drank quite a bit of alcohol: wine, beer, Grey Goose Vodka (my favorite) and Tequila.
I think my cardio saved me: this morning I only weigh 3 pounds more than the lowest I've weighed on this cutting cycle, and my measurements are all identical. It looks like I didn't lose any muscle, and I put on very little (if any) fat. As you can imagine, I'm holding some water this morning, so by Wednesday or Thursday I should be pretty much back to where I was. I'll be maintaining a strict SGX cutting diet for the rest of June, and then I'm done cutting for this year.
As you may have guessed, I've had a tremendous amount of work pile up in my absence. I quickly checked the forum a couple of times last night and all seems well, but there may be a few issues that still need to be resolved. It's going to take me a few days to get caught up, so please bear with me.
Thanks for visiting--it's great to be back!
