Yesterday's trip to Costco for my most of my 2008 bulking proteins was very successful--perhaps a little too successful. My shopping list was already pretty crazy, but I wound up buying even more than I'd planned to. The only things I couldn't get at Costco were the 96% lean ground beef and the brown rice. Lisa can get those things at our local grocery store, so we'll just purchase them weekly. Other than that, I'm all set for my bulk!
I completely filled the big freezer in the garage:
That's 70 pounds boneless/skinless chicken breasts, 10 pounds chicken thighs (for Lisa), 10 pounds Orange Roughy fish, 21 pounds eye of round steak, 10 pounds large peeled/de-veined shrimp, 15 pounds wild Sockeye Salmon, 12 pounds sirloin burgers and 8 pounds turkey burgers. Don't worry, I'll eat it all, I promise.
I also stocked up on oats, natural peanut butter and olive oil.
I'm very excited about this bulk. While I don't think I've been lazy over the past year, as most of you know there have been a whole lot of distractions, changes and other priorities in my life during this time. I don't regret any of the choices I've made and, despite all the distractions, I've managed to stay in pretty decent shape. Still, my physique is unquestionably showing the effects of a year out of focus. My upcoming bulk represents a time for me to make fitness and weight training a priority once again, and I'm very fired up about that prospect. Over the next month the anticipation is going to continue to build, and on September 29th I'm going to fire out of the gates with laser-like focus.
Today, however, I'm going to watch movies and eat popcorn, candy and hamburgers with my family. Have a great day!
August 30, 2008
I think I'm going to relax my diet a bit for the holiday weekend. I want to enjoy some burgers on the grill when our family comes over tomorrow, have some popcorn while we all watch a movie, and at some point this weekend I'd also like to take Lisa out to our favorite Mexican restaurant (which is something we've not done in quite awhile!) I know all this is going to leave me looking bloated for my monthly pictures on Monday, but that's OK. I'm about to start bulking anyway, so I'd better get used to looking softer than usual. With my goal of gaining as much strength as possible before my bulk starts at the end of September, a little extra food certainly won't hurt. I gotta say, it sure feels good to not be cutting anymore; I was really getting tired of it!
So today is big shopping day. Lisa and I will be loading up on proteins and other foods for my upcoming bulk (fresh foods will obviously need to be purchased weekly). Here's what's on the list for today: 7.5 pounds Orange Roughy, 8 pounds shrimp, 9 pounds Wild Sockeye Salmon, 4 pounds lean turkey burger, 10 pounds 96% lean ground beef, 80 pounds boneless/skinless chicken breasts, 10 pounds chicken thighs (for Lisa), 20 pounds eye of round steak, 8 pounds of Quaker old-fashioned oats, 10 jars Smucker's natural peanut butter, 8 pounds brown rice and 2 big bottles of olive oil.
On a weekly basis I'll be purchasing red potatoes, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, egg whites, whole eggs, grapefruit, broccoli and salad greens.
These are the foods that will fuel my workouts and provide my body with the raw ingredients it needs to build muscle. Notice that there is not one single item on the lists that is not 100% all-natural. I'm a big believer in staying away from processed foods when cutting or bulking. The one exception to that "rule" is protein powder.
While I'm bulking I will also get at least 8 hours of sleep every night and I will not drink any alcohol.
Diet, training, rest and recovery are four critical components of any successful bulk. I want to maximize the results of my hard work in the gym, and in my experience all these things must be in order to do that.
I'm just throwing some random musings out there this morning. Over the next few weeks I'll be consulting with Mastover to solidify the plan. I will post detailed food logs and training information once everything is nailed down.
I'd better get moving, lots to do today. I hope you have a great Saturday!

The forum software upgrades were completed successfully and without issue yesterday morning. Prior to this software update a few of you were getting an error message that indicated you need to wait "x" amount of time between searches, even if you'd already waited that amount of time. While this bug only affected a very few members (I could not reproduce it, but still reported it to the developers as a bug), I'm pleased to inform everyone that that the cause of that bug has finally been found and fixed.
While I'm on the subject of the forum software, non-members are now able to search the JSF forums. I had to disable searches for non-members on the old hardware because searches can be very CPU-intensive and they were hurting performance for the regular members. The new servers can easily handle the increased load, so I've re-enabled the search feature for everyone. Of course I hope non-members who find this site will go ahead and create a free account on the forum, but I also realize that some people are just looking for a bit of quick information; I'm happy that we're able to give those people the ability to search the extensive JSF forum archives once again.
Practically every muscle in body is unbelievably sore right now. Today I'll be working my delts and traps, which are pretty much the only muscle groups that are not currently on fire. I'm glad I've got a nice 3-day weekend to recover.
It's Friday! Tomorrow Lisa and I have a lot of cleaning and chores to do, and we'll also be going to Costco to stock up on protein foods. My bulk starts in one month, and tomorrow I'll be buying tons of chicken, steak, shrimp, fish and 96% lean ground beef. I'm glad I have a big spare freezer in the garage--I'm definitely going to need the space.
On Sunday we're having family over for movies, popcorn and hamburgers. This should ensure that I will look nice and bloated for my monthly pictures on Monday morning.

I think I'm going to have time to upgrade the forum software this morning before work, so this is going to be a very short update. I expect the upgrade to take 1-2 hours, and the forums will be down during most of this time. While the forum is down you will see a message indicating what's happening along with an estimated time of completion. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience the downtime causes. There are quite a few bug fixes in this software update, so it's important that I get it done as soon as possible.
Before I sign off, I'd like to wish my mom a very Happy Birthday!
August 27, 2008
Today I'll be doing some afternoon HIIT cardio. Right now I'm carrying a little extra fat, but I'm not concerned with fat loss--I'm focused on building strength up for my upcoming bulk. The only reason I'm doing cardio at all right now is to keep my cardiovascular system in decent shape. As I mentioned yesterday, my weight training for the next month will primarily consist of compound and Olympic lifts using low (4-6) reps, heavy weights and long rest intervals. I've found that lifting in this style (very similar to MAX-OT) well help me quickly build my strength, but is not much of a cardiovascular challenge. So, that's the reason for the HIIT.
I should probably do a body fat reading this weekend. I'm not sure where I am right now, but with summer fading away and the "bulking months" on the near horizon, I'm not that concerned about having a little extra meat on my bones. That said, I'm not going to add anywhere even close to the amount of fat I've added on previous bulks!
I'm going to have to upgrade the forum software sometime over the next few days. I can't set an exact time right now; I'm going to have to perform the upgrade whenever a block of free time opens up for me. I just want to make everyone aware that the forum will likely be down for a couple of hours sometime this week. While the upgrade is in process you'll see a message indicating what's going on when you try to access the forum. This upgrade is primarily a bug fix upgrade.
Thanks very much for all the supportive emails and PMs about Turtle. She had her first appointment with the specialist yesterday, and there is no evidence of metastasis (that the cancer has spread)--at least not at this point. Her prognosis is currently listed as "Guarded". Most dogs don't live more than 3-6 months after being diagnosed with oral malignant melanoma, but we remain optimistic that the cutting edge treatment she started yesterday (Canine Melanoma Vaccine) will be the miracle we need.

I mentioned yesterday that I put on a little over 10 pounds during the four short days of the JSF cruise. As I also mentioned yesterday, I was on vacation the rest of last week after we returned from the cruise, and continued to eat whatever I felt like (mostly what I'd consider junk foods). Despite eating tons of buttered popcorn, BBQ, hamburgers and french fries, I still lost two pounds of my post-cruise water weight last week. I guess that shows just how much food and drink I was consuming while on the cruise. Anyway, yesterday was my first day back on my regular clean diet and this morning I woke up 5 pounds lighter than I was yesterday morning. I knew most of the weight I put on was just water weight, so it doesn't surprise me that of the 10.6 pounds I gained during the cruise I've already lost 7 of them. I'll probably lose a little more water weight over the next couple of days. I suspect only put on around two pounds of fat.
Speaking of the JSF cruise, if you missed yesterday's update I linked to all the photos, videos and stories. You can check it all out in the Official 2008 JSF Cruise Pictures and Videos Thread. Please keep in mind that there is some strong language and other stuff that you might possibly find offensive.
I'm back in the gym now, and I've got a little less than 5 weeks before my 2008 bulking phase starts (September 29, 2008). I've decided that for the next 5 weeks I'm going to focus on strength building. I'll be eating at, or slightly above, maintenance level calories, and doing mostly compound/Olympic lifts in the 4-6 rep range using very heavy weight. Rest intervals will be fairly long at 2 or 3 minutes.
I'll be posting my 2008 bulking food logs, supplement intake and training plans sometime over the next few weeks.
Poor Lisa. She was on her way home early this morning, exhausted after an entire day of traveling as she made her way back home from her business trip in Mexico. It was almost 1:00 AM, when I got a panicked call from her Assistant Manager. Her assistant said the police had just called her (damn near gave me a heart attack, I thought Lisa had been in an accident), and Lisa's store had been broken in to. Long story short, Lisa--just minutes from home--had to divert to her store and was there until 5:00 AM this morning while the police did their work and the big window was replaced. She had to get up just two hours later and is about to leave to go back to work. Bunch of savages in this town.
I have to get going--Turtle needs to be at the vet early this morning. I haven't mentioned it here, but our dear dog Turtle was diagnosed with malignant melanoma shortly after we returned from the cruise. The tumor is in her mouth, and the prospects are not good. Chemo is not an option for these types of tumors, but there is a new treatment that may or may not help. We're going to do everything we can for her. Turtle's been a part of our family for 10 years. Needless to say, we're devastated. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She needs all the help she can get right now.

The JSF cruise to the Bahamas was a massive success! Everyone who went had an incredible time, and we're already talking about next year's annual get-together (more on that later in this update).
I know you all are anxious to check out the pictures, watch the videos and read the stories. There is a ton of material in the Official 2008 JSF Cruise Pictures and Videos Thread. Please keep in mind that there is some strong language and other stuff that you might possibly find offensive.
When we left for the cruise I joked that if I didn't put on 10 pounds, it would be a failure. In the space from Friday morning through Tuesday morning I actually did put on 10 pounds (10.6 pounds, to be exact). When I left for the cruise my abs were showing, by the second day they were already quite blurred, and by the end of the cruise they were nothing but a memory. We ate an insane amount of food, but I think we drank most of our calories.
The second day of the cruise all of us decided to go on an excursion to Breezes in Nassau, which is an all-inclusive resort (Phillydude's idea, and it turned out to be the highlight of the trip). When I say "all-inclusive", that's exactly what it means: all the food and alcohol you want is included at no extra charge. The excursion cost $99.00, and I think it's safe to say we all got many times our money's worth. On that day we must have crushed several hundred tropical drinks, beers and other assorted alcohol-based concoctions, we ate hamburgers, french fries and jerk chicken on the beautiful beach under the Caribbean sun, we fed fish as they swam around us in the shallows of the sea, M@ played pool volleyball while the rest of us lounged around at the swim-up bar, and Chameleon, well... you'll just have to check out the pictures and video.
While we all enjoyed the cruise ship, it was unanimously agreed that the all-inclusive resort was the most fun we had on the trip. We've sort of informally agreed that next year we'll just fly directly to a yet-to-be-determined all-inclusive for the annual JSF get-together. Some possible locations being tossed around include Breezes in the Bahamas, Moon Palace in Cancun and Jamaica. Check the Official 2008 Cruise Thread and feel free to join the informal discussion. I'll start a new thread soon so that we can get serious about picking next year's spot. Most of all, start saving your pennies! Next year's JSF bash promises to be the biggest, wildest and most fun get-together yet, and we want YOU there.
After returning from the cruise last Monday, I had the rest of the week off from work. I didn't workout, and I ate pretty much what I wanted. I played poker, watched lots of movies with the dogs (Lisa had to go out of town on business--Cancun--right after we got back), ate a metric ton of popcorn and basically goofed off and did nothing even close to anything resembling responsible behavior.
Today it's back to business: work and the gym. I'm out of time, so I'll talk a little more about what I'll be doing in the gym tomorrow.
I hope you enjoy the cruise pictures and video, and I also hope many of you will start planning to come to next year's annual JSF gathering. Oh, if it's not already clear to you after looking at the pictures and video from this year's trip, these JSF get-togethers are gatherings for adults. There's lots of drinking, cussing, sexual innuendo... and Phillydude. If you choose to bring your kids they'll likely be scarred for life.

No update - on vacation.
August 10, 2008
It's almost time for the JSF cruise, and Lisa and I are getting really excited! My mom and her friend are coming all the way from Texas to house-sit and stay with the dogs while we are gone. My mom and her friend will be here a few days before we set sail, so I'm looking forward to hanging out and spending some time with them. Once I return from the cruise I'll be on vacation from work for another whole week, so that should give me plenty of time to recover from the wild times we are sure to have in Nassau.
I originally planned to make my last update to this site on Thursday morning, but I've decided to make this morning's update my final update before the cruise. I'm on vacation, but I have a tremendous amount to do to prepare for the cruise and my mom's visit. I'll resume my regular daily updates to this site when my vacation is over (Monday, August 25, 2008).
I'm going to start opening the "100 Challenges" for registration earlier in the month to help give people plenty of time to get signed up. So, with that said, next month's "100 Challenge" is open for entry! Details are immediately below today's update.
OK, so that about wraps it up! Those of you who are coming on the JSF cruise, I'll see you in a few days! If you were not able to make this year's annual get-together I'm sure we'll have plenty of pictures and stories to share with you when we return. Bon voyage!
Registration for the September 2008 "100 Challenge" is now underway! Your Official Challenge post must be made by 7:00 AM (EDT) on September 1, 2008 if you plan to participate--NO EXCEPTIONS! To participate, you must be a member of the forum. If you are not a member, simply create a free account. It can take up to 24 hours for your account to be activated, so don't wait until the last minute to register! For all the details, official rules and sample entry data, just head over to the September 2008 "100 Challenge" thread on the forum. If you are ready to work hard and want to challenge yourself in a fun and competitive environment, then please take part!
August 9, 2008
I'm going to have to make this a quick update this morning, as I've got a very busy day ahead. This is the last weekend before the JSF cruise, and I've got about a million things on my "to do" list.
I'd planned to do some LISS cardio this morning, but I just don't have time to get it done, so I'm going to try and sneak a 16-minute HIIT cardio session in sometime this afternoon.
Sorry about the short update. Enjoy your Saturday!
August 8, 2008
I'm down another pound as of this morning (2.4 pounds total for the week), and this morning Lisa is down another 1.4 pounds
(3.4 pounds for the week--a little much, but I think she was holding more water than I was). As I mentioned yesterday,
the only change we made after being stalled for a couple of weeks is we eliminated alcohol. I knew it would work, but Lisa was skeptical: she
didn't think a few glasses of red wine could completely stall her fat loss, and wanted to cut her calories. I told her I didn't think it was necessary
for her to eat less, and to try the whole "no alcohol" thing with me. Needless to say, she's very happy with me right now.
Putting aside the mental discipline one needs to lose fat, there's really not much to it--at least not until you start dipping into the mid-ish single digits (below 8%). Eat clean (this is VERY important), do some cardio if you want (HIIT, LISS--who cares--do what you enjoy), lift weights with intensity and work hard and you will lose fat. If you are not losing fat then there's usually a simple reason why. In my case, I was recently stalled because I was drinking alcohol several nights per week.
Dieting down to contest body fat levels without losing muscle can be tricky, and is a completely different subject, but most people are not interested in reaching 5% body fat. Stick to the basics, work hard and the fat will come off. Even a complete beginner who has no idea what it even means to eat "clean" can spend 2 or 3 hours reading the stickies in the beginner's forum and come away with enough basic knowledge to formulate an intelligent fat loss plan.
I'd better get some breakfast going. Happy Friday, everyone!
August 7, 2008
A few days ago I mentioned how clean my diet has been, and how I've not missed any cardio or workouts--yet my fat loss had been completely stalled out for a couple of weeks. I said that I was not going to change anything about my program, except I was going to completely stop drinking. This morning I'm down 1.4 pounds. It's not a coincidence. More proof? Lisa is also on a little "pre-cruise" cut, and--like me--her fat loss had stalled for several weeks. She stopped drinking at the same time that I did, and she's down 2 pounds after a long stall. Again, neither of us changed a single thing other than that we completely stopped drinking.
By the way, I don't drink beer, wine or mixed drinks: I drink straight vodka. The reason I mention my drink of choice is because I often see people suggest that hard liquor is "better" than beer or whatever from a caloric standpoint. Maybe there are more calories in a Pina colada than a couple shots of vodka, but that doesn't mean the vodka isn't adding plenty of "empty" calories to your diet AND stopping your body from burning fat.
If your diet and training are solid, yet your fat loss is stalled out, try completely eliminating alcohol. You will be pleasantly surprised with the results.
August 6, 2008
I haven't mentioned my bum shoulder in quite some time, and the reason for that is because it just has not been bothering me at all. I mean, I can still feel that it's not "right", but I've not experienced any debilitating shoulder pain in a long while. Actually, lifting never seems to bother my shoulder, it's always stuff like washing the car or painting a room that reminds me of my chronic shoulder problems.
There is a reason I'm mentioning my shoulder this morning. Back when my shoulder was really bad (and was preventing me from lifting), I used to do 50 push ups every morning as soon as I woke up. This was not a very smart thing for me to do, but somehow I thought the push ups were not aggravating my injury. I stopped doing the morning push ups a long time ago, but this morning I decided to see if I could still do 50 perfect push ups (I can, yay), and my shoulder is not really happy right now. Don't worry, it's not that bad, but it certainly is letting me know to knock off the push ups. It's interesting that I can bench and dip with lots of weight and not have any problems, but bodyweight push ups seem to be out of the question. Something about the movement of the push ups just kills my shoulder. So, today was probably the last time I'll ever do push ups!
I'm off to ice down my shoulder and take some pain killers. Just kidding, I'm fine. Have a great day!
August 5, 2008
I had to work over the weekend, so I've got today completely off from work! I think I'm going to do my back & biceps workout this morning between meals 1 and 2 so I have the rest of the day to do whatever I want. I'm not sure what I feel like doing today, but right now I'm leaning towards spending a significant portion of the day brushing up on my poker and blackjack skills. I'm definitely going to spend some time in the casino on the JSF cruise, and my game is very rusty. I love cards, but I've never been in a casino in my entire life. It probably won't end well, but at least I'll have fun going broke.
Reminder: I'll be on vacation from Friday, August 15th through Sunday, August 24th. There will be no updates to this site on those days.
Alright, I'm going to cut today's update a little short and go get the gym staged for this morning's workout. Have a great day!
August 4, 2008
I think I'm going to shift my training schedule around a little this week. I've got meetings all day today, so this morning I'm going to do some cardio, and tomorrow (which I have off from work) I'll do my back and biceps workout. I also might alter my split this week and do a 3-day split instead of a 4-day split.
I never used to change my splits or training, but lately I've found it very refreshing to modify my schedule and even change my workouts around while in the gym. This flexibility has been sort of liberating, and has made working out even more fun and enjoyable for me. I always go into go into the gym with a plan, but sometimes it's cool to say, "Nah, I think I'd rather do this exercise right now" or "I've got DB laterals planned, but I'm going to shake things up a bit and go down the rack with no rest until I can't lift my arms." The bottom line is you've got to do whatever it takes to keep your workouts fun, challenging and exciting. Otherwise, you're going to get bored and stop training. If you find yourself dreading your workouts, try tossing out the rule book. Just get in there and have some fun!
August 3, 2008
My fat loss has completely stalled out, and I've been 100% perfect with my diet, training and cardio. There's no way I need to drop my calories any more, as they are already quite low. I know what the problem is: alcohol. For the past few weeks I've been drinking vodka several times per week (on non-training days) and there's little doubt in my mind that the alcohol is grinding my fat loss to a stop (not to mention it's terrible for me). I'm going to completely stop drinking from now until the cruise, and not change anything else about my fat loss program. I'll bet anything this one change will allow me to resume losing fat (I suspect that I'm between 8% and 9% body fat right now).
Over the years I've seen a lot of questions on the forum about alcohol consumption and how it affects our ability to lose fat and/or gain muscle. The short of the long is that when you chose to imbibe your body stops burning fat and building muscle while it is dealing with the alcohol. How much and how often you drink is, of course, entirely up to you, but don't try and rationalize or sugarcoat the effects.
Lisa's back from her business trip. We don't have any chores to do today, so it looks like a fun movie day is in store (after my cardio, of course!) I hope you enjoy your Sunday, too!
August 2, 2008
I had to skip my leg workout yesterday because my legs were still significantly sore from last Thursday's (over a week ago) workout. The longest my legs have ever been sore is 10 days, and I just tied that "record" because this morning they are still slightly sore. Training my legs tomorrow would be dumb because then I won't be able to deadlift on Monday, so I decided to just skip this one. I'll work my legs as scheduled this Thursday, and they should start recovering much quicker now.
I'll be on vacation later this this month from Friday, August 15th through Sunday, August 24th. There will be no updates to this
site on those days. Of course the 2008 JSF Cruise sets sail for the Bahamas on the 15th, and we're all very excited and
looking forward to an awesome trip. I'm sure we'll all have plenty of pictures and crazy stories when we return. M@, Phillydude, jk0,
Lisa and I decided to pony up for an excursion to an all-inclusive resort once we dock in Nassau. There will be beaches, wind surfing, snorkeling,
as much free food as we can eat, gambling and a swim-up bar with all the free drinks our livers can handle. Hopefully none of us will get arrested, or worse.
This morning I'm going to bang out a 45-minute LISS cardio session before my busy day. Unfortunately I've got to work today, but I'll be taking Tuesday off in exchange.
August 1, 2008
My HIIT cardio session yesterday afternoon was awesome! I got my heart rate up to 194 beats per minute, which--if I'm not mistaken--is the the highest it's ever been! The "220 - AGE" formula that you see tossed around all the time is often wildly inaccurate. According to that formula, my maximum heart rate should be just 181 BPM! Please don't let that formula limit you: the only way to really know your maximum heart rate is to push yourself as hard as you can until you actually reach it! As long as you and your heart are healthy, there is NO danger in doing HIIT cardio with maxim effort intervals. If in doubt, always check with your doctor first.
OK, it's time for my monthly pictures, and they are a mixed bag. I guess I'll start with the bad. There's no getting around it: my front picture looks absolutely horrible.

There's still some bad post-op swelling (at least I hope that is what it is) bellow my belly button. It looks very unnatural and just.... ugly. Of course there is a very real possibility that is not swelling; it could be super-stubborn fibrous fat. It feels hard to the touch. Time will tell, I guess.
On a somewhat brighter note, even with the swelling my profile is already looking much improved. Check out the difference below my belly button as compared to my last monthly profile photo (May):

I know my muscles look very flat right now. The back injury and the surgery resulted in lots of time out of the gym, and it shows. I'm very confident that my upcoming bulk is going to get me back to where I was, and then some.
Well, I have to admit this has been a stressful morning for me. I didn't particularly want to post these pictures, but this site has always been about documenting my ongoing journey, and not just showing the highlights. So, there it is.
